KULIR 100 ... tHE FrOZEN OnE...

Music: Bobo Sashi

The title could be reminiscent of all things pleasant in this inexorably hot weather, but watching debutant director Anita Udeep’s Kulir doesn’t have the same effect. Anita, after probably having set out to deliver a message-movie, has lagged behind soon enough and ended up doing just the opposite.Sanjeev’s father Aditya is an infamous gangster and his mother splits from him to raise her son away from the bad father’s presence. Sanjeev, however, grows to be nothing less than a gangster displaying the characteristics of his genes – roughing up his teacher at school and getting expelled from the school. The mother sends him to Ooty to a better and disciplined school in a hope that her son gets a better life. The Ooty school life, however, awakens his murderous instincts after the death of his roommate. He tracks down his rival classmates who are responsible for the killing and executes them one by one. Even better, the police do not find a clue and writes down the cases as natural deaths. Kulir 100 °After having successfully vindicated, Sanjeev returns home only to find out that he is punished in a different manner.Justifying the acts of murder by a teenager is precisely the major issue of the movie that sticks out like a sore thumb. Besides, the plot leaves a lot to be desired too. With a running time of 2 hours, the movie’s first half sustains only in the goofy antics of Bobo Sashi, who has also scored for the movie. Not to mention, the latter part trickles down to nothingness. The title song sung by Silambarasan and the Mudanmurayaga song stand out in Bobo Sashi’s composition in the otherwise insipid background music scene. Anita is let down majorly by the lack of drive in the plot and she is going to hear a lot of ‘there is no story in the movie’ in the near future. If you are in a mood for risk, we suggest you try Kulir. Chances are that the title will have an effect on you – when in an A/C theatre with only vacant chairs for company, that is.

With previous week not being so fair enough for film buffs, it's quite moderately contrastive here. Kulir 100 Degree - what an interesting title that's so stark. Anita Udeep being worked on so many international projects delivers her first directorial feature. Finest part is that the films duration is just couple of hours and she doesnt drag you long for this simple story.Nothing exceptional we find here...Surya (Sanjeev), a youngster on his 11th STD is much involved in rowdyism, although he's an intellectual guy in his class. His mom Parvathi has been staying away from her husband (Adhitya) who's again a damn bully. Despites this alienation, Surya maintains a cordial relationship with his dad. Fearing that his future may get spoilt, Surya is sent to Lake View Boarding School in Ooty where things are so new to him. Rest of the film is all about how life moves on there with first love, a lovable friendship, troublesome enmityNewcomer Sanjeev goes for a matured performance and it's a good start. He's good on emoting perfectly as well dance. Model Riya is cool as a Barbie girl but doesnt suit the onscreen. The fat Babloo adds to the humor quotients as well adds substance to the show.Anita Udeep has done a brilliant job on coloring the visuals. Cinematography by L.K. Vijay scores 10/10 while Lenin's editing is commendable. On the other end, Anita Udeep could've have added more interesting parts in this film. Although, there is romance, humor and action, It's not presented in adequate proportions and slightly scatters away audiences' attention. As a whole, 'Kulir 100 Degree' is a flick you can watch once if you've 0 degrees of expectations...

Anita Udeep is a welcome addition to the list of Tamil women directors, but her first commercial film Kulir 100 Degree, leaves one cold! The film is un-involving, and one wishes Anita had whipped up a more winsome screenplay. In her pre-release interviews the writer director had said that the film is “about six teenagers studying in a boarding school, their friendship, laughter and love.” It was but natural to expect a trendy, cool and youthful entertainer. Alas what we get is a half baked movie with hardly any romance or fun, and a story that just doesn’t wash.Surya (Sanjeev) is the son of a local dada (Aditya), and studies at the Chengalpet Matriculation School. His mother who is separated from her rowdy husband wants him to grow up as a model citizen. Unfortunately he has more of his father’s genes and gets expelled for beating up a teacher.Surya who is attached to his mother gives a promise that he will not take the path to violence again, and is admitted to the up market Lake View School in Ooty (the principal of the school Thalaivasal Vijay says it is the “best school in south Asia!!”).The Chengalpet guy is looked down by his snooty seniors led by Rohit (Rohit Rathod) and his gang. The only person who stands with him is Babloo (Bobo Sasi), and the principal’s daughter Tanya (Riya) who has a soft corner for him.Under extreme provocation, Surya keeps his cool as he tries to live up to his mother’s expectation. However he breaks down after Babloo is murdered, and goes on a revenge spree. The film ends on a tragic note, as the message of the film is conveyed. The film lacks believability factor as there are too many loopholes in the storyline. How can a guy studying in a matriculation school get admission with scholarship in a snooty and totally up market school? The police have no clue to Babloo’s murder, which is written off as a natural death? The heroine role is poorly etched and is sent away for psychiatric treatment half way through the movie! The pluses are L.K Vijay’s Camera and Bobo Sasi’s songs though his background score is a let down. The first half is ok and there is some freshness about it, but peters off into nothingness towards the abrupt climax. The film lacks the magic one associate with boarding school brat pack movie. Let us hope Anita Udeep, learns from her mistakes and finds a better script in her next outing.

Verdict: Watchable
