Red Tape
The shooting of Asokavanam came to a halt as Forest officials ordered to stop filming it in the Malayattoor forests after they found breach of the agreement.

The officials found illegal construction of temporary huts by film’s crew for storing equipment in the prohibited area Mahagonythottam

Some rare plants in the area were alleged to be destroyed as vehicles passed to reach the location. The permission for shooting was granted for 20 days within two month period and it was the fifth day as per the terms. Hopefully the problem will be settled soon.

Wedding Bells for actress Meena ...

It is marriage season for Kollywood. Wedding of popular actress Meena is scheduled to take place in Tirupathi, in presence of her close relatives on July 12th. Her peers need not worry as a reception for the newly wed will be held in Chennai on July 14th.
This beauty in the southern filmdom has not been able to find a man in her life for a long time even though Meena and her mother had been looking for a groom. Reasons are many, Meena who happens to be the only child of her parents wanted to get married to someone who was settled in Chennai, so she could be near with her parents. The other reason is a gossip that her mother Raja Mallika who is a former actress and politician is against marriage, as Meena may not get heroine role in films.

Meena is a rare phenomenon. Actresses won’t get chance to pair with heroes in popular commercial films after certain years in industry. Meena born on September 16, 1978 made her debut as a heroine in 1991. This 30 plus actress is heroine in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu films at the same time. She was the favorite heroine of superstar Rajinikanth at one point of time and has acted in four consecutive Rajani films. She is apt heroine for Mohanlal and Mammooty even today. Lately she was chosen to act in superstar Rajni’s Kuselan. She was found paired with Vijayakanth in latest flick Mariyadai. Meena was more popular among the youth with her navel revealing outfits, than the younger Meera jasmine who looked tainted in Mariyadai.

Meena Durairaj has started her career as a child artist when she was studying in 8th standards in Vidyodhya School, Chennai. Meena completed Master of Arts in History from Madras University under Open University system.

The competition from younger heroines in Tamil is high as every other day new beauties from the age 15 are introduced as heroines. When her chances in Tamil have gone thin, she started concentrating in Malayalam and Kannada films. To withstand the tough competition in the tinsel town, Meena has even shifted her gaze to the small screen.
In this arranged marriage the bridegroom, Vidyasagar, is a software engineer based in Bangalore. A formal engagement ceremony was held at Meena’s residence in Saidapet in which a few of the actress’s friends from the film industry attended.

As any heroines she also was a friend of gossips. It was rumored that she is married to a Japanese man and that she is in love with a Telugu actor and so on. Another gossip was that Meena got married to Kannada actor Sudeep when they acted together in two films. Meena denied all these.

As her 31st birthday is fast approaching she has completed acting with all leading actors in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. Meena is busy with Telugu spiritual movie like Venkamma and Malayalam movies.

Meena assured fans that she would continue to act in films and TV serials, provided good opportunities come her way. She was reportedly asked to give her meaty roles like Asin in Gajini and Jyothika in Chandramukhi.

Nadodigal : Don’t ever miss this gypsies

Production: Global Infotainment Pvt LtdDirection: Samuthirakkani

Star-casts: Sasi Kumar, Abhinaya, Anaya, Vijay Vasanth, Bharani, Ganja Karuppu and many others.

Music: Sundar C Babu

Wow, ‘Subramaniapuram’ team waving the hands of success with their piece of recital. Followed by ‘Subramaniapuram’ and ‘Pasanga’, the team delivers yet another superb film. Although, Director Samuthirakkani enchanted us with his performance as antagonist in ‘Subramaniapuram’ and he had earlier proved his directorial adeptness in TV Series ‘Nadodigal’. After watching the film, you’ll really wonder why leading actors in Kollywood refused to do this film. However, their loss is Sasi Kumar’s gain for he excels fabulously. My God! Your inner spirits will send you throwing appraisals for Sasi Kumar on witnessing his grandiloquent show. What an expression? Doubtlessly, he has billion dollar expressions. Not alone him, Bharani of Kalloori fame supposes to be a comedian at initial parts, but emotes extraordinarily on many quotients; more in frustrated moods. The film is about group of friends; Karuna (Sasi Kumar), Chandran (Vijay Vasanth) and Pandian (Bharani) who are leading happy lives in their hometown. Happy family and good friendliness amongst them is almost like a feel of paradise coming down on earth. Perhaps, a fateful encounter comes through Karuna’s closer friend Saravanan who attempts for suicide due to love failure. The girl he loves is the daughter of a bigshot in Namakkal and Saravanan is the son of a powerful Ex-MP. With all their earnest efforts, they travel to Namakkal and get the young lad and missy united. The friends are completely deteriorated like almost dead with their futuristic plans gone shattered. Anyhow, they’re so elated that their friends are leading a happy life. But sooner, they’re blown out of waters on getting to know that the couple is gonna get divorced. What would be their reaction? Watch the unexpected on the screens with an appealing message for the contemporary society. Quite shocking yet powerfulAs mentioned earlier, every character has lived under the skin of their characterizations. Ganja Karuppu on his part adds more to the humor quotients while Bharani, Vijay and Sasi are top-notching. Abhinaya, Anaya and Nivetha live up to expectations. Background score by Sundar C Babu is fantastic especially the ballad kind of song ‘Sambo Siva Sambo’ (Both versions). A surprisal comes through continuous claps from the audiences throughout the song. Dialogues have been pretty well penned by Samuthirakkani that receives warm welcome. Screenplay seems to be little falling away in places soon after the intermission, but the pace gears up high during penultimate sequences. An open ending with the group of friends on their next task is a surefooted factor for film’s success.

Verdict: Decorously fabulous

The Malayalam blockbuster Twenty:20 starring virtually the entire industry- Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Jayaram, Dileep and others is being remade into Tamil.

H.Murali of Classic Creations who is now making Jaggan Mohini has purchased the remake rights.

T:20 in Malayalam was a huge hit as the film was produced by the artists association AMMA along with actor Dileep’s 'Grand Productions'.

However in Tamil it is doubtful if big stars will act in the remake. The basic success of T:20 in Malayalam was that it was a multi starrer and all the superstars had equal roles to play.

The film has been tentatively titled Irupathu Irupathu, and finalization of the film’s cast is going on.

Prithvi Raj as Ravan Raj ... Aishwarya Rai as Seetha..

In Maniratnam’s Asokavanam (Modern version of ramayana) Prithvi Raj is playing the role of Ravana, with Aiswarya Rai as Seetha. Both in Malayalam and Tamil Prithvi proved his talent through some amazing roles. In Tamil his characters in Mozhi, Kannam mochi eneyda and Sathumpodaathay were commercially and critically considered as the best from a new comer. Some tamil critics even considered him a s new generation Kamala Hassan. Handsome, sensible actor packed with talent.Otherwise he wont choose the role of ravanan in this film. Some people considers that Prithvi is taking an unnecessary risk by stepping into the shoes of a Villan even when Manirathnam is willing to offer him the lead role in his next madras talkies production. But the actor who believed in portraying characters rather than stardom proves the same by accepting some remarkable characters in malayalam, like the recent ones in Thalapavu and Thirakatha. In both these films he acted considering the character rather than his star value. His presence in the films like Achanurangatha veedu, Akale, Manchadikkuru (guest appearance) and Pakal is also a good example for his commitment towards good cinema.Keeping in mind the roles with a negative touch he played in Stop violence ,Vasthavam and few sences in Anandhabhathram it is sure that the character of Ravan will be safe in the hands of Prithvi and it will be a landmark role both in Prithvis career and in the history of cinema.

His upcoming malayalam projects are Robinhood and Calender.

Pokkisham : Cheran and Padmapriya ...

This story of lost love is between a Hindu boy, Cheran who is an engineer working in Kolkata and a Muslim girl, Padmapriya a student of Tamil literature in Nagore. 1970s Kolkatta is recreated by Vairabalan and his art crews. Sabesh-Murali joins hands with Cheran for the third time after Thavamaai Thavamirundh. The lyrics are penned by Yugabharathi. One of the songs of the film, Nila... sung by Vijay Yesudas and Chinmayi, is considered to be the highlight of the film having three full songs and seven bit songs.Padmapriya plays the role of Nadira in the film. Cheran first offered the role to Priya Mani but she rejected the offer. It has made much news in Kollywood. Cheran has complained earlier that Priyamani hasn’t taken his call.Rajesh Yadav cranks the camera.Pokkisham is produced by Hithesh Jabhak. After this film, Cheran is expected make a sequel to his film Autograph.Cheran has always been a natural story teller with a reputation for directing culturally strong films. So it is with great anticipation that people are waiting for his latest film Pokkisham

Mohanlal’s Upcoming Movies....

Bagavan is arguably the biggest flop for Mohanlal and one of worst films in Malayalam cinema history. But that doesn’t create a trouble for this great actor. He is one fine man who is always calm; he is known for his humility and is always ready to help others. Technicians love to work with him as he is no trouble maker. What does he have to achieve by doing this? His anxious fans are worried of him not taking rest. Is it his decision to act in this much films or someone else coerces him to sign, who knows?

Bhagavan Review ....

Bhagavan directed by Prasanth Mampully starring Mohanlal will go into history as the movie that was shot in the shortest span 19 hrs and also as one of the worst movies malayalam has ever seen. It is a pity that an actor like Mohanlal has acted in such a low standard movie. The director lacks any talent to be a director. The sad thing is that the movie has a good theme but the TV serial kind of narration has made it look pathetic.Even the charisma of Mohanlal will not save this one.Bhagavan is about Dr Balagopal(Mohanlal) a gynecologist in a private hospital where the wife of the HomeMinister(Sivaji Guruvayoor) of the state is about to deliver a baby.Terrorists attempt to steal the baby and hold it for the release of some accomplice. And bombs are supposedly planted across the state. The movie is about how Dr Balagopal tackles the situation. The movie has a TV serial narrative of long scenes and emphasis on trivial matters. The music is no different.Actors look very unnatural even Mohanlal at some scenes look very unnatural.DialogSues are as pathetic as the movie itself. When you watch this movie you feel that you could have made this movie better. My rating1/5Jose ThomasRecently Mohanlal haven’t brought us many great films. So our reviews reflected it. But some considered us to be anti- Mohanlal while we were being impartial. Writing about this film will only strengthen their belief. For the love of this actor I keep my mouth shut and hands locked.

Sufi Paranja Katha : An expected Vishu Release

Sufi Paranja Katha is the third venture of National Film Award winning director Priyanandanan, Priyanandanan was honored with the best feature film award for his second venture Pulijanmam starring Murali, Sindu Menon etc.Sufi Paranja Katha is the adaptation of famous Malayalam writer K.P. Ramanunni's novel with the same title. The novel Sufi Paranja Katha won the Kerala Sahitya Academy award and Edasseri award. He also won the Rashtriya Sahityik Puraskar instituted by the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad. Ramanunni's other works include Jeevithathinte Pusthakam, Charama Varshikam, Vidhathavinte Chiri, Vendappettavante Kurishu, Purusha Vilapam and Jathi Chothikkuka. Ramanunni, was born in 1955 in Ponnani, ‘Sufi Paranja Katha’ means the story as told by Sufi. The Sufis are Muslim mystics. Film tells the story of relationships existing between Hindu and Muslim families during early nineteenth century in Northern Kerala.Sharbani Mukherjee the cousin of Rani Mukherjee, Kajol and Tanisha is staging a comeback with this Malayalam film. She is not a new face for Malayalees as she had acted in Priyadarshan's Rakkilipattu.Sharbani Mukherjee made her debut in the Bollywood film Border, 12 years back. Karthy a beautiful Nair girl (Sharbani Mukherjee), is the daughter of a local Adhikari Shanku Menon played by Thambi Antony. She falls in love with the coconut seller Mammootty played by Prakash Barre.Eventually they marry and Karthy gets converted to Islam. But she was unable to resist the customs and longings she had for her own religion. Her husband who is the Muslim character makes a Bhagavathy temple for her, which creates communal tension. In the film Sharbani wears the traditional dress of Nair girls Mundu and Mulakkacha used in the 19th and early 20th century. This has created a big buzz around the heroine and the film. Producers can expect to cash in on this oomph factor which suddenly surfaced. Sufi Paranja Katha began shooting on December 7th in Ottappalam, Palakkad. Other cast members include Babu Antony, Innocent, Jagathy, Mullanezhi, Thambi Antony, Indrans, Mala Aravindan, Vineeth Kumar, Manikandan, Samvritha and Sona Nair. Robin Hood : Prithviraj as robber ...

Joshie the veteran director in Malayalam is famous for adapting with changes. The director known for his bombastic hits with super star Mammooty is outing this time with youth icon Prithviraj. Robin Hood is Joshie’s latest project after the super hit multi starrer Twenty 20.Prithviraj who is successful in both Malayalam and Tamil films is presently doing many ambitious projects. In this film Prithviraj plays a physics teacher working at an Entrance coaching centre. As every good hero should be, he robs to help the destitute (wow, that’s a new thing at last). Our hero is skilled in modern technology (Google...) and he robs ATM. Narien acts the role of a private detective named Alexander with eccentric character. He was an IPS officer who throws away his uniform as he needed freedom (truly heroic, isn’t it? Then why in the first place he has done IPS and spends tax payer’s money at the cost of another candidate).Narien is a good actor, hope he won’t fall into the pit as other actors while portraying eccentric character. Viewers are hoping he does the character with some amount of believability. This will be the first time, after Classmates, Narain and Prithviraj be seen on screen together. Director Renjith was the first choice to don the private detective role. He opted out as his schedule coincides with his other films. The dialogue and screenplay of movie is by writers who can grab feminine minds; Sachi – Sethu. They have penned the script for the recent hit, Chocolate. The movie will have Bhavana in the female lead as a bank manager. Sleepy star Biju Menon dons the role of commissioner. Sai Kumar has the role of an executive in the bank.Viewers can expect a thriller with all the ingredients of family, comedy sentiments, romance and action from this seasoned director. Trade circles are bullish on this project and are competing to get the film.Shanta Murali and PK Muraleedharan produce the film under the banner Ananda vision.

Kanchipurathe Kalyanam Review ....

Stories which involve marriages happening in Tamil Nadu have always attracted Malayalee’s attention. Film lovers in Kerala cannot forget one of the biggest hit Thenkasipattanam which tells the story of friendship with Suresh Gopi and Lal as heroes. Kanchipurathe Kalyanam is a film made on analyzing the variables of many hit films. Suresh Gopi and Mukesh where friends and had earlier run an event management company together. Mukesh married Suresh’s sister which is not very much appreciated by the hero. As revenge to his sister Suresh lived as a bachelor. The entire film hangs on the thin thread that Mukesh need Suresh to marry which is not acceptable to the latter. Heroes were asked to take up an assignment to manage a marriage function in Kanchipuram. They took up the assignment and moves to the place. But they hadn’t expected some villains and a romantic heroine is waiting. As story moves forward viewers find there were no hard feelings between the old friends, just like the feel we get while peeling onions. Nothing inside. There are many comedies in this film, but significant aspect is not many comedies are new. The film has everything that generally filmmakers believe the audience needed. There are many films from successful director Shafi which discusses the problems created by Marriages. What will happen if yet another film is made on the same formula by a new director duo? That’s what we are to witness in weeks to come. If a film is made by putting ingredients of many successful films it may become successful. But if directors are cooking it for the nth time it may not taste good for the audience. While watching this film one may remember many old hit films.Still this film has got some potential to make an average hit. Kanchipurathe Kalyanam is not a bad film. The rich cast in movie promises to attract youth and family audience. The posters are colorful which guarantees fun.Generally the acting is carried out well. Audience feels the absence of Salim Kumar and Suraj Venjaranmoodu.Suresh’s mannerism looks exactly as in many other films. On directing front the duo have done commendable work, especially in crowd scenes, though they lacked finesse. If they can change the beliefs on creating successful movies and come up with good stories they have the caliber to create hits. Kanchipurathe Kalyanam has nothing new to offer but is still a watchable flick.

Puthiya Mukham...starring Prithivraj.

Prithviraj's upcoming Malayalam film Puthiya Mukham, directed by Deepan, an associate to Shaji Kailas, has completed its entire shooting and post production works.
Deepan had earlier debuted as an independent director with movie The Leader which hadn’t made any impact at the ticket booth.
Puthiya Mukham, a campus masala, has Prithviraj allied with two heroines.
In the film, Prithvi plays a mridangam exponent, Krishna Kumar who comes to Cochin to pursue engineering course. The pleasant life of this boy soon undergoes drastic changes. The eventful journey takes him to face the real estate mafia and liquor moguls portrayed by Saikumar, Shammy Thilakan and Bala.
Priyamani plays an engineering student, Anjana. Meera Nandan, whose earlier films were Mulla and Currency has sensational character in this film as Sree Devi.
Some portion of the movie was shot in Ottappalam at the famous Varikkassery Mana. A song was canned in Malaysia.
After the much heralded Thirakkatha, directed by Ranjith, Prithviraj and Priyamani squad in Deepan's new film.
Prithviraj is teaming up with Meera Nandan for the first time in Puthiya Mukham, which devotes equal importance to love and action. Prithvi’s last Malayalam film Calendar hadn’t made a fare and immediately left theatres. Mukesh had more importance in that film.

The film is probable to bang Cinema halls next week.

Alexander the Great : Mohanlal as Businessman ..

Alexander the Great is the upcoming Malayalam film with superstar Mohanlal in the lead. This action adventure has started shooting from May 20 in Thiruvananthapuram. The film is directed by Murali Nagavalli who made his debut as an independent director with Mohanlal starrer Wanted in 2004. Murali is famous in film industry as the associate of Priyadarshan. Murali’s Wanted was a good thriller but haven’t got much attention because it didn’t had third grade masala content the audience needed. The script for Wanted was written by Priyadarshan. Wanted was remade into Bollywood film which didn’t saw much success again.Mohanlal has given 45 days call sheet for the film which will be over by June end. The character in the film played by the actor has no historical relevance like the legendary warrior king Alexander. Lal’s Alexander Varma, a man with diverse qualities is highly intelligent and conquers the business world with his brawn. Viewers can expect a comical racy entertainer. Like Vasco Da Gama, in Chotta Mumbai, Alexander is also Kerala born, who rose to fame for his abnormal character.Alexander Varma is born to a Malayali father and an Anglo Indian mother. He has terrific IQ, and wins many battles but the war is with fate. The movie evolves around the strong relationship between Alexander and his brother. Mohanlal will not have a heroine in this film, Fazil’s discovery Aswathy Asokh will play an important role in this intelligent thriller. The movie is planned to be shot at locations including Mumbai and Dubai.Siddique, Ganesh Kumar, Vijayraghavan, Lakshmi, Kiran Kher, Jagathy Sreekumar and Innocent will appear in key roles.Cameraman is Subramaniapuram fame Kannan. Music is by Ilayaraja. Scripted by debutante C. Balu, Alexander the Great will feature songs penned by Gireesh Puthencherry. The film is produced under the banner Anugraha Cine arts by V.B.K Menon who has produced many super hits in Malayalam

Passenger.... Worth Watching....

Cast : Sreenivasan, Dileep, Mamtha Mohandas, Lakshmi Sharma, Jagathy Sreekumar, Nedumudi Venu, Sona Nair

Direction : Renjith ShankarProduction : S P Pillai, Sankaran Kutty

I had prejudice about the film ‘Passenger’, even though I believed that it would have some thing different to offer. The film started slowly. It looked bad. The first part of film dragged through the needle in my watch. But 20 minutes before interval things started changing. The story gained momentum. Here comes some serious competition for seasoned thriller film directors. Passenger is a film which set standard for thriller genre in Malayalam. This film will be considered bench mark for the debutant directors for the coming years. There are no fancy shots. There is no song or a fight. There is a story which touches the mind of common man and the chapters in the story are so racy and are tied together so hard that viewer’s eyes get glued to the screen. If a second the viewer stop by and think why their heart is pounding so fast the answer is the brilliance of director Ranjith Shanker. He has done magic with minimum facilities. This first time director had brought freshness into storytelling that Malayalam screen lacked. Many films are considered better and made hit by viewers, because there is no tough competitor, there is no real leader. When the viewer’s eyes and mind were mud with seasoned filmmaker’s clichéd filmmaking style came the movie Passenger. Passengers being without any stylishness got directly into the mind of viewers and made them want the hero to win.Sreenivasan is the hero in this Dileep starrer. People are going to love Dileep and Sreenivasan for being the characters’ in this film. Nedumudi Venu had done justice to his role. The director was successful in extracting the best from Jagathy Sreekumar by seizing the overacting done by the actor for some years. Mamtha Mohandas looks nice and have acted well. The most important thing in the film is its natural look which makes audience believes that, this is happening in their life. We feel like reading a racy Dan Brown novel. The cinematography, the editing and other technicalities are ok. Nothing special to write about them other than it all added to the impact of the viewing experience. After the pathetic Moz and Cat here comes a hit for Dileep. This 1 hour 50 minute film is going to sweep you off your feet. The gung ho audience is all praise for director and the team which made this movie happen.A tight script like this was seen earlier in Hollywood film Phone Booth and in Bollywood film A Wednesday and Kollywood film Saroja which also talk about the common man. In A Wednesday the common man was done by Nassruddin Sha.After ‘2 Hariharnagar’ came the better ‘Bhagyadevatha’ but now comes the unexpected winner of all. The rise of director Ranjith Shankar starts here.Passenger is a must watch that no one should miss. It once again states that great films start with great stories. Ranjith Shankar has proved himself with his first film.

A fateful night that changed the lives of some people who almost belong to a cross section of the society! Perhaps a perfect premise for an edge-of-the-seat thriller and that is just what debutant director Ranjith Shankar offers in Passenger. Here is a film with a nice storyline that succeeds in keeping the intricacies of the narrative intact. The film begins by focusing on the life of Sathyanathan (Sreenivasan), who travels on a season ticket regularly, to his office and back. He is a nice soul, with a concern for the well being of others. One night, he remains asleep on his way back after a tiring day in his office and fails to get down from the train at his destination, Nellayi. That results in a chance meeting with Advocate Nandan Menon (Dileep), who also happens to be a fellow traveler in the same train, on his way to Guruvayur.Around the same time, Nandan's wife Anuradha (Mamta), a TV journalist, is all set to unearth a scoop involving the tainted defense minister of the state. Though he was a total stranger until some moments ago, Sathyanathan proves to be the crucial factor in the lives of the couple, after the minister and his goons start chasing them. The best thing about the film is its ensemble cast that puts together a fine show, without the bindings of any set images. Dileep never tries to impose his heroics and is riveting, Sreenivasan is superb as the ‘Good Samaritan' and Mamta for once, shines in a non-glamorous role. But the surprise package is the inimitable Jagathy Sreekumar, essaying an amazing performance as the corrupt minister, who in fact is a cold blooded villain.True, the film has its loose ends in the script and the director has gone for a conventional style rather than a modern approach, in the presentation. The dialogues are at times dramatic as well. But on the whole he has been successful in presenting the story as an engrossing thriller with a stunning climax.A considerable portion of the film happens inside the railway compartments and that has been handled with the expertise of a seasoned filmmaker. The visuals are quite good and the background score has been used in a highly effective way. It's the gripping manner of presentation that makes the film, a must watch. As one comes out of the theatres after watching the film, several questions arise in our minds regarding the various possibilities that the protagonists had, in the given situation. Now, that's exactly where the film succeeds. It makes you think about it for sure even after you're out of the theatres, perhaps unlike other recent films!Passenger, is a taut thriller, with gritty performances that keeps the mercury rising. It moves like a super fast express train, racy with a running time of 2 hours, and is worth a ride. Go for it!

Those who think the future of Malayalam films is bleak, watch Malayalam film Passenger starring Dileep, Sreenivasan and Mamta Mohandas. The film gives you hope that there are new filmmakers, who want to try something out of the ordinary. The film, written and directed by newcomer Ranjith Sankar, stays away from clichs as far as possible. The gist of the film is simple: Any commoner with courage can take on the high and mighty and fight injustice. When that commoner is portrayed by redoubtable Sreenivasan, you are sure to be entertained. The backdrop of the film is a train journey and a group of people using the train daily to earn their livelihood. They become friends with the fellow travellers and pass their travelling time playing cards and gossiping.Sathyanathan (Sreenivasan) is member of one such group. His character is established as an activist with zeal; running a signature campaign for cleaner toilets in the trains and demanding more trains on busy routes. But this is looked down upon by his family and friends.Running parallel to this is the story of a yuppie couple Adv. Nandan Menon (Dileep) and his TV journalist wife Anuradha (Mamta Mohandas). They are also social activists in a way. They have locked horns with no less than the Home Minister, Thomas Chako (Jagathy Sreekumar) over an environmentally disastrous case of sand mining, which would displace a whole community. The Home Minister is also entangled in a sexual harassment case.By interval, all the three parallel stories suck us into its vortex. There are numerous things going for this film apart from the basic story and the structure. This may be the first Malayalam film where new age technology tools like 3G cell phones, laptops and webcams are shown in a positive light (maybe because the creator Ranjith Sankar is a former IT professional). And like his Guru Lal Jose, the narrative is not overly dialogue-driven.Sreenivasan is the pivot around which the film revolves. But thankfully, there is no overdose of self deprecatory humour.Dileep happily plays a role that may be termed as second fiddle. Mamta Mohandas' oomph quotient is used in minimum, which is a rarity. Veterans like Jagathy and Nedumudi Venu are judiciously used.On the whole, Passenger is worth your time and money.

Phew! Finally a film that puts the snap, crackle and pop back into the thriller genre! If you have for once gulped down a sigh, having sat through a tautly made Tamil flick, wondering why films of the sort are never ever made down here, head straight to the hall near you that plays Passenger. Ranjith Shankar's independent style flaunts a classic stratagem that pumps in the right amount of grit and intrigue into a film that's as spry and alive as it could possibly be.It all happens on a day when destiny throws in a bunch of people going on with their uneventful lives, together on a mission. Sathyanathan (Sreenivasan) is one of the millions of daily commuters by train, who having fallen asleep one late night misses his home town station. Waking up, he gets acquainted with Nandan Menon (Dileep), an advocate by profession who is heading to a hotel room where he would be alone for the night, since his wife Anuradha (Mamta Mohandas) is away on an assignment, covering up a news story that has been rocking the state. The men strike up a pleasant conversation before parting ways as the train grinds to a halt. Little do they realize that the TV journo has on her cards, a set of different plans - those that will change their lives forever. With any number of film makers out there obsessed with tradition, culture and even language, Malayalam cinema had almost begun to remind me of branded bottled water. Exactly the same size, manner and taste. And along comes the Passenger, that's packed with plenty of smart, fresh and welcome touches. Little wonder then that it injects a new verve into a medium that had been rotting away in a swamp of replications. Now this is what I would call smart film making. It doesn't climb up that high-and-mighty platform to look down on the masses who have gathered to receive those pearls of wisdom that would soon drop down in profusion. On the contrary, it has its theories firmly rooted in the ground, and it occupies a seat beside you and me and takes a look at the world around. And finally, lets us decide.Passenger respects the age and times that have witnessed its making. It's a film for today. And it smells of the real world from which you had taken a break. There is the new age grandmom who has cast aside the betel pot for the remote and who busies herself supporting her faves on the reality show. An entire generation that has mistaken an addiction for machismo isn't spared either. A popular sport rules the roost in living rooms. Hi-fi gadgets and gizmo occupy laymen pockets and mouths. There are any number of sequences that would make you feel if you haven't felt that sometime yourself. Such is the proximity that the film builds up in no time. There's a fantastic rejoinder that Sathyan puts forward, when he suggests that these days jokes are often restricted to dreams. Open your eyes and you see disasters all around. And when the station master admits that fear has almost become an ingrained emotion in man, we can only readily agree with a nod.Working up his way from a tight and real solid script, Ranjith extends the bristling style that he cooks up in the first hour, in new directions in the latter half, as he lives up to time-honored story expectations. He does the obligatory wrapping up without inflicting musty conventions upon the viewers. Songs for one, go for a toss. And so do the absurd stand-up humor tracks. Superbly planned and elegantly executed, there's rarely a dull moment in this adroit film.I am tremendously glad to see two actors breaking up the fetters that have been binding them down terribly. Sreenivasan brings in an ordinariness to his portrayal that's quite effortlessly endearing. Dileep effectively underplays his role to perfection and it's heartening to see him go for a role that offers him some meat with a vengeance. This should be a clean start for Mamta as well, whose choices have been nothing short of catastrophic till date.I have little doubt that I am gonna watch this one all over again. And I'm sure several of you would do as well.

Doctor Patient ....Review

When mortals make film they are passionate about it and is certain about its success, which may make them blind. People who are part of this film should not take the remaining note personal. An individual needs two qualities to become a good directorOne artistic,Other is to convince a producerMany directors (around the world) seem to have only the second.Anyone can direct a film if given proper support, but to convey his point to audience need skill. It needs talent to engage them and still more talent to make his product entertaining to public. This film lacks a script. It feels like director shot the film with one line.If this film is telecasted in T.V, people would have changed the channel with in minutes. But in a theater what can audience do?There were less than 30 souls in theatre, not including the workers. When the film completed half hour, I was wondering why others are not leaving theatre. My question got answered at interval when some of them left. After interval when I came back, I felt viewers with their friends, looking at me like a giraffe in theatre. I found an acquaintance who wished me luck. I wished him back. He would have thought how I am suffering this plight alone. When I got into the seat, I began thinking of the remaining people in theatre. I couldn’t understand their psyche.I was fortunate enough to have some oracle when I watched the later piece of this art. I realized the value of time, the value of money. I realized humans are wasting tons of there energy just to create something worthless.Every one wore that funny look when I came out after successfully completing the film. By this time I garnered great respect for malayalees. I now have substantiated evidence that many are veritably forgiving. They are so calm; they won’t get violent even if given a shock. Was Jesus born here? The other good things happened while making this movie is that the wealth got distributed among other subjects of this world. But the wastage of fuel and energy are unacceptable. As every government in the world is becoming conscious of green energy this kind of wastage of natural resources should not be allowed. This note being called a review, I have to write some part of story. As your wish here it goes. Jayasurya is the doctor who comes to take charge in mental hospital. Introducing a hospital, where there is only one doctor, lot of patients, and all celebrity patients in ward 6. The rest of first part is similar with Thaalavattam and the second part is Thalavattam with a positive end.Suraj does the part of Jagathy in Kilukkam. Jagathy, Maniyan Pillai Raju, Bijukkuttan are all wasted. If there’s a scale to measure entertainment value of films …………The story has no flow, while the film is full of flaw.Camera by eminent M.J Radhakrishnan is fine. Editing is ok.Jayasurya looks handsome. Not writing about the director who also wrote the script.

This film can be send to worst film of the year category.

KULIR 100 ... tHE FrOZEN OnE...

Banner: Mayajaal Entertainment
Direction: Anita UdeepStar-casts: Sanjeev, Riya Poongodi, Thalaivasal Vijay, Adhitya and many others.
Music: Bobo Sashi

The title could be reminiscent of all things pleasant in this inexorably hot weather, but watching debutant director Anita Udeep’s Kulir doesn’t have the same effect. Anita, after probably having set out to deliver a message-movie, has lagged behind soon enough and ended up doing just the opposite.Sanjeev’s father Aditya is an infamous gangster and his mother splits from him to raise her son away from the bad father’s presence. Sanjeev, however, grows to be nothing less than a gangster displaying the characteristics of his genes – roughing up his teacher at school and getting expelled from the school. The mother sends him to Ooty to a better and disciplined school in a hope that her son gets a better life. The Ooty school life, however, awakens his murderous instincts after the death of his roommate. He tracks down his rival classmates who are responsible for the killing and executes them one by one. Even better, the police do not find a clue and writes down the cases as natural deaths. Kulir 100 °After having successfully vindicated, Sanjeev returns home only to find out that he is punished in a different manner.Justifying the acts of murder by a teenager is precisely the major issue of the movie that sticks out like a sore thumb. Besides, the plot leaves a lot to be desired too. With a running time of 2 hours, the movie’s first half sustains only in the goofy antics of Bobo Sashi, who has also scored for the movie. Not to mention, the latter part trickles down to nothingness. The title song sung by Silambarasan and the Mudanmurayaga song stand out in Bobo Sashi’s composition in the otherwise insipid background music scene. Anita is let down majorly by the lack of drive in the plot and she is going to hear a lot of ‘there is no story in the movie’ in the near future. If you are in a mood for risk, we suggest you try Kulir. Chances are that the title will have an effect on you – when in an A/C theatre with only vacant chairs for company, that is.

With previous week not being so fair enough for film buffs, it's quite moderately contrastive here. Kulir 100 Degree - what an interesting title that's so stark. Anita Udeep being worked on so many international projects delivers her first directorial feature. Finest part is that the films duration is just couple of hours and she doesnt drag you long for this simple story.Nothing exceptional we find here...Surya (Sanjeev), a youngster on his 11th STD is much involved in rowdyism, although he's an intellectual guy in his class. His mom Parvathi has been staying away from her husband (Adhitya) who's again a damn bully. Despites this alienation, Surya maintains a cordial relationship with his dad. Fearing that his future may get spoilt, Surya is sent to Lake View Boarding School in Ooty where things are so new to him. Rest of the film is all about how life moves on there with first love, a lovable friendship, troublesome enmityNewcomer Sanjeev goes for a matured performance and it's a good start. He's good on emoting perfectly as well dance. Model Riya is cool as a Barbie girl but doesnt suit the onscreen. The fat Babloo adds to the humor quotients as well adds substance to the show.Anita Udeep has done a brilliant job on coloring the visuals. Cinematography by L.K. Vijay scores 10/10 while Lenin's editing is commendable. On the other end, Anita Udeep could've have added more interesting parts in this film. Although, there is romance, humor and action, It's not presented in adequate proportions and slightly scatters away audiences' attention. As a whole, 'Kulir 100 Degree' is a flick you can watch once if you've 0 degrees of expectations...

Anita Udeep is a welcome addition to the list of Tamil women directors, but her first commercial film Kulir 100 Degree, leaves one cold! The film is un-involving, and one wishes Anita had whipped up a more winsome screenplay. In her pre-release interviews the writer director had said that the film is “about six teenagers studying in a boarding school, their friendship, laughter and love.” It was but natural to expect a trendy, cool and youthful entertainer. Alas what we get is a half baked movie with hardly any romance or fun, and a story that just doesn’t wash.Surya (Sanjeev) is the son of a local dada (Aditya), and studies at the Chengalpet Matriculation School. His mother who is separated from her rowdy husband wants him to grow up as a model citizen. Unfortunately he has more of his father’s genes and gets expelled for beating up a teacher.Surya who is attached to his mother gives a promise that he will not take the path to violence again, and is admitted to the up market Lake View School in Ooty (the principal of the school Thalaivasal Vijay says it is the “best school in south Asia!!”).The Chengalpet guy is looked down by his snooty seniors led by Rohit (Rohit Rathod) and his gang. The only person who stands with him is Babloo (Bobo Sasi), and the principal’s daughter Tanya (Riya) who has a soft corner for him.Under extreme provocation, Surya keeps his cool as he tries to live up to his mother’s expectation. However he breaks down after Babloo is murdered, and goes on a revenge spree. The film ends on a tragic note, as the message of the film is conveyed. The film lacks believability factor as there are too many loopholes in the storyline. How can a guy studying in a matriculation school get admission with scholarship in a snooty and totally up market school? The police have no clue to Babloo’s murder, which is written off as a natural death? The heroine role is poorly etched and is sent away for psychiatric treatment half way through the movie! The pluses are L.K Vijay’s Camera and Bobo Sasi’s songs though his background score is a let down. The first half is ok and there is some freshness about it, but peters off into nothingness towards the abrupt climax. The film lacks the magic one associate with boarding school brat pack movie. Let us hope Anita Udeep, learns from her mistakes and finds a better script in her next outing.

Maasilamani.....Expert Comments..

The age old formula in Tamil cinema is given a new coat of paint with R.N.R Manohar’s Maasilamani. Don’t expect anything great, just sit back and watch the film as a mass masala entertainer meant strictly for a particular section of the audiences. The film is plain silly at the same time funny in parts. It’s etched from various earlier films, and at times it looks like a sequel to the lead pair’s earlier film Kathalil Vizhunthen . The opening Nakul introduction song itself look similar to the famous Nakku Mukka…, even in picturisation and sets. The wafer thin storyline is straightforward. Massi (Nakul) an orphan lives in a lower middle class colony, where everybody dotes on him. He is a mass hero who you see only in Tamil films- a popular guy in his colony who takes up local issues, fights for them, and has a heart of gold though those who don’t know him thinks he is a rowdy.Massi falls in love at first sight with Divya (Sunaina), a rich upper middle class girl who is a dance instructor. She thinks that Massi is a rowdy and a creep and will not fall for him under any circumstances. Urged by his friends (Santhanam & Srinath) Massi becomes Mani, the soft spoken sophisticated guy with the clean look. He wins over her large family (Delhi Ganesh and others), due to his smooth talking and winning ways.Though initially, Divya refuses to believe that he is Mani, a look alike of Massi the rowdy, soon he has her eating out of his hands. Enter Bhoopathy, the local corrupt Sub Inspector, with an eye on Divya and a determination to prove that Mani is none other than Massi, the rowdy. All this leads to a twist in the tale climax. The film has all mass elements like larger than life hero, his introductory song, duets in foreign locations, sentiments, comedy and a predictable action scene inside a go-down. The comedy track of MS Bhaskar and Karunas where they pay tribute to all larger than life Tamil superstars and mass films is hilarious. D.Imman, after a long time has come out with some peppy music with Dora, Dora… being the pick of the lot.Nakul is a fine dancer but has a long way to go to become a mass hero, while Sunaina proves she has it in her to make it big with a performance where grace and maturity are the keywords. On the downside, the film moves at a leisurely pace in the first half devoted mostly to songs and comedy tracks. The second half the film slowly picks up speed as the story unfolds leading to a thrilling climax.

‘Kadhalil Vizhundhen’ perhaps could’ve been commercially successful with the wild marketing of Sun Pictures. But to be incisive, this endeavor with ‘Maasilamani’ is quite commendable from the point-view of ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres. Director Manohar who strikes with his debut directorial after penning dialogues for various Tamil films has proved himself to be brilliant on penning smart-moved plots. Although, few amongst them in screenplay are illustrating to be absurd, they’re diminished with the good packaging. After a long time, we tend to hear whistles of cheering from audiences for the fast beat songs. Applause to Imman indeed! The film’s script is so simple. Born and brought up across the lanes of Rani Anna Nagar slum, Maasilamani is an aggressive youngster who strikes violently when unjust troubles his colony members. He falls in love with Divya (Sunaina) hailing from a rich background and well-pampered by her family members. Eventually, rest of the film is about the girl mistaking the boy to be a ruffian and later how this lad wins over her heart with smart moves forms crux of the story. The screenplay is so interesting especially in the latter part once Pawan, the police officer is introduced. The protagonist’s smart moves are so decorously planted by Manohar, especially the climax portions with lots of fun and equivalently emotions. However, the filmmaker could’ve avoided the lengthy-dragging dialogues and got it trimmed in climax as audiences are quite perplexed what she wants to convey.Although, there are certain loopholes in the racy-screenplay, it isn’t much blatant to your cognizance if you’ve merely planned to sit back and relax. The film has much funny movements that are quite enjoyable. MS Bhaskar enacting the role of various actors from Rajnikanth till ‘Ghajini’ Surya is hilarious. Santhanam-Srinath combo works the best alike in ‘Santhosh Subramaniam’. Nakul has improved a lot from his previous film and behaves much matured. Sunaina looks so contrastive from her debut flick as she has lots of rooms for performance, uttering dialogues and glamorous quotients.Musical score by Imman embellishes the film with good songs. ‘Odi Odi’ is a peppy fast beat number that wins the applause from audiences. Thiru’s cinematography is okay and he could’ve avoided certain shakes on his camera. On the whole, ‘Maasilamani’ is a film you can watch once if you’re not so concerned about logics.

Looks like there is no respite from the dry spell cast by the lack of new releases at the box office. And lesser said the better about the ones released. SUN Pictures’ Masilamani gives you an instant hangover of having watched too many movies over a very short period of time. The script feels like a medley-mash of movies released over the past decade. And it wouldn’t be possible for us name each of them since the list runs to pages.Masi (Nakul) is college student, who is also a social activist. For example, if there is a block in his street’s open water drain he would run up to the MLA’s house and wreak havoc. And if there is an eve-teasing incident on the buses that run in his area, he would bash the miscreants to armor the innocent girls. Sunaina, however, mistakes his so-called social activism to anti-socialism. On the other hand, Nakul has fallen for her hook, line and sinker and realizes that she’s his ideal girl. So to win her heart, he wins her family’s first. Under the disguise of Mani, who is Mr. Deeds. The whole world and her family, of course, know Mani except Sunaina. And when she finds out that both Masi and Mani are the same, she has to decide whom she has fallen for. MasilamaniWith a brittle story like that, director Manohar treads the script with aides in the name of comedy, only to abruptly leave it after a certain point of time. The comedy track, handled by MS Baskar, although inadequately written, provides comic relief. Baskar’s different getups from famous movies including Sivaji, Alavandhan and Ghajini manage to bring smiles, if not a hearty laughter. And Baskar has Karunas to company.Nakul – Sunaina looks an item. Everything from their chemistry and acting has considerably improved ever since their first time together. We only wished the movie had little more substance to sustain people’s interest. Imman’s score is largely passé except for the Dora Dora song, penned by Pa. Vijay. The Kavidai Gundar song Odi Vilayadu fails to recreate their usual magic. While the movie starts off promisingly, 20 minutes later, we find ourselves shifting in our seats counting the seconds and scratching the seats for the interval to come up. The second half gathers momentum, but only to culminate into a banal climax. Thus, Masilamani is necessarily targeted for the B and C centers, for people who have long forgotten the Tullada Manamum Tullum days.

Like a well-oiled machine, Sun Pictures has been ramming movie after movie down the throat of the Tamil film-going public in a relentless fashion. While some fall flat, one or two have turned hits and others fall into the "not bad" territory: They've all got the requisite hero-flexing muscle, pretty heroine and enough comic elements to keep the aisles happy. AGS Entertainment's Maasilamani, directed by R M R Manohar falls in the third category, especially as it repeats the hit-pairing from Kadhalil Vizhunthen. It doesn't raise any such hopes within you in the beginning, though. When Maasi aka Maasilamani (Nakulan) is introduced as the chocolate-boy who works unceasingly for the benefit of Rani Anna Nagar, Chennai, you try in vain to suppress a yawn. He dutifully salutes the camera (and his audience), bashes up goons, helps old people buy land, clears up sewers and challenges MLAs -- and also falls in love at first sight with pretty Divya (Sunaina), who takes classical dance classes like a dutiful heroine, at Nadanalaya. Adding a bit of desultory spice to the proceedings are Pazhani (Santhanam) and Kathir (Srinath) -- but in reality, it's Coma Ramaswamy (M S Bhaskar, his cinematic aspirations and Karunas antics that bring in more laughter. As expected in any done-to-death love story, Divya catches Maasi in all sorts of bad situations -- when he's actually doing it for a good cause. He pursues her relentlessly, she refuses him, convinced he's a thug, until Maasi and his friends hatch a plan to ingratiate themselves into Divya's good books, with his alter ego -- Mani. From hereon, the story actually does perk up a bit as all sorts of catchy situations occur and Maasi extricates himself from each one of them. Most are tried and tested, with stock dialogues and punches -- but whether it's Nakul's boyish personality or Sunaina's fresh charm, work it does, sometimes.Unlike Kadhalil Vizhunthen, D Imman's music does nothing to make you sit up, while Vetri's camera does its best with the simple storyline. It might be run-of-the-mill, but Maasilamani does have its enjoyable moments. If you want to kill a couple of hours, here's the flick for you.

Verdict: Mass Masala
